The World's Youngest Mother

Lina poses with her doctor, her 11-month-old son, and Dr. Lozada.

Peruvian five-year-old Lina Medina, accompanied by her
11-month-old- son Gerardo, and Doctor Lozada who attended
her son's birth, are shown in this 1940 file photo taken
in Lima's hospital.

When her child was born by Caesarean section in May 1939,
Medina made medical history, and is still the youngest
known mother in the world.

Lina Medina's parents thought their 5-year-old daughter
had a huge abdominal tumor and when shamans in their
remote village in Peru's Andes could find no cure, her
father carried her to a hospital.

Just over a month later, she gave birth to a boy.

Medina was born on September 27, 1933 in the small village
of Paurange.

She was only 5 years 8 months old at the birth of her
child on Mother's Day, May 14, 1939.

Born at full term at Lima's maternity clinic, her child
was taken through a caesarian operation (Dr. Lozada and
Busalleu, operators, Dr.Colretta, anesthesiologist) .
The child (boy), weighing 2,700 grams, was well formed
and in good health. Child and mother were able to leave
the clinic after only a few days.

Doctor Lozada has conducted very detailed studies since
the diagnostic of the pregnancy which aroused much
curiosity in the country; he took an x-ray of the child
and her baby, established a diagnostic of the fetal situation
observed the state of functionality of the little mother
who had begun menstruating at the age of 8 months. At
four years old she had already developed breasts as well
as pubic hair, her body proportions were a bit amazing
and her bone hardening a bit advanced, things that are
often observed in cases of such premature pregnancy.

After taunting from schoolmates, Medina's son, Gerardo
who was named after one of the doctors who attended Medina
and who became their mentor - discovered when he was 10
that the person he had grown up believing to be his sister
was in fact his mother.

Gerardo died in 1979 at age 40 from a disease that attacks
the body's bone marrow, but it was said it was not clear
there was any link with his illness and the fact his mother
had been so young at his birth.

Medina herself married and in 1972 had a second son, 33
years after her first. Her second child now lives in Mexico.

Mystery of the One-Eyed Child

CHENNAI, India -- A child born here last month with one eye and severe brain damage has died, leaving unanswered how doctors came to suspect the infant’s mother may have been exposed to an experimental cancer drug known to cause the defect.

The child was never given a name and was listed in the hospital's register as "baby of Gomathi." She died in the first week of September of complications arising from her condition, known as cyclopia, having survived longer than any other known similar case. Wired News first reported on the child's condition in August.

Cyclopia is a rare defect that affects about one child in a million. The child's brain had been fused into a single hemisphere; she had no nose and only a single eye socket in the center of her forehead.

An internal hospital report seen by Wired News stated that there were only two potential causes: Either it was the result of an undetected chromosomal disorder or the child's mother had been exposed to cyclopamine, an experimental drug being researched by several U.S. pharmaceutical companies as a potential treatment for cancer.

Cyclopamine is available through several drug suppliers in the United States and Canada.

Hospital authorities at Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children stated that the mother had sought an unknown treatment from a local fertility clinic that may have caused the condition. Yet hospital authorities remain tight-lipped about the child's medical history and have refused several attempts by multiple press agencies to locate the fertility clinic or interview the mother.

An attending nurse said that the mother "must have taken some tablets" to cause the condition. Before going to the clinic the mother had been childless for six years.

Despite several weeks of inquiry there have been few developments in the investigation to uncover more information about the cause of the condition. Hospital authorities have refused a request for the child's birth and death certificates and efforts to locate the mother have been unsuccessful.

Hospital superintendent Dr. S. Dhanalakshmi said doctors did not collect information about the fertility clinic or medication the mother had been using. She defended the oversight in the medical report by stating the pediatrician was uncomfortable asking for medical information because the mother had already been "traumatized enough." The mother remained at the hospital for at least three days after delivery.

Rare Prehistoric Shark In Japan

A rare prehistoric shark was discovered by local residents in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo. The huge eel-like creature, considered to be a living fossil, was taken to Japan’s Awashima Marine Park and placed in a seawater pool. But the new environment was fatal and, only just a few hours after it was moved, the unusual shark died.

World's Smallest Man Hooked Up with Longest Legs Lady

The world's smallest man hooked up with the lady with the longest legs. He Pingping, who is just 74.61cm tall (2ft 5.37in), posed on steps in London's Trafalgar Square with Russian Svetlana Pankratova, whose legs have been measured at 132cm (4ft 3.9in). That is almost twice his height.

Pingping admitted he was head over heels in love - but not with the lady towering above him. Pingping, who was born with primordial dwarfism, was thinking as ever of his girlfriend back in Inner Mongolia.

The world's smallest man, He Pingping, and the woman with the longest legs in the world, Svetlana Pankratova, both celebrate the launch of the 2009 edition of the Guinness World Records in Trafalgar Square, London.

He said through an interpreter: "I always miss her when I'm not with her." The 20-year-old has been going out with the woman, who is of average height, for six months. He is from Huade County in Wulanchabu, and at the time of his birth was no bigger than his father's palm.

He Pingping met Svetlana at the launch of the 2009 edition of the Guinness World Records book. Svetlana, from Volgograd, lives with her Russian boyfriend on the Costa del Sol in Spain, and is 1m 96cm tall (6ft 4in).

The 36-year-old said of He Pingping: "I heard he was going to be the shortest man, but I didn't realise he was going to be that small. "He seems very happy, he smiles and laughs a lot." Svetlana, who works in a real estate agency business in Spain, already has a boyfriend shorter than herself. "I don't mind dating a shorter person, my boyfriend is 1m 85cm (6ft 1in)," she said.

Dinner in The Sky - Dinning at a High Altitude

Dinning at a high altitude - it might seem fantasy, but the following pictures prove it’s real. The idea originated in Belgium and it involves a massive table (assembly required, the 150 foot crane not included), seating for 20 people and the waiters. The table has been seen in Paris or Belgium, at special events, and is expected in New York and Niagara Falls. This restaurant in the sky can come to your town for a mere $20,000.

Unusual dining experience. This Belgian company offers you dinner in the sky.
